Alternative equations for generalized polynomials on hyperbolas

From MaRDI portal

The author extends his as well as others' preview results on solutions of alternative equations, in particular the equation \(f(x)g(y)=0\) on certain curves (such as polynomial, ellipses and hyperbolae) to the case of generalized polynomials. Earlier results assumed \(f=g\) and/or restricted the type of hyperbola \(\mathcal{H}_{a,b}=\left\{(x,y)|\left(\frac{x}{a}\right)^2 - \left(\frac{y}{b}\right)^2=1\right\}\) to \(\frac{a^2}{b^2} \) being rational or only considered the case of generalized monomials and showed that then \(f=0\) or \(g=0\). This work uses a reduction theorem to show that it is enough to consider the hyperbola \(\mathcal{H}_{1,1}\) and then proceeds to show that if \(f(x)g(y)=0\) on \(\mathcal{H}_{1,1}\) where \(f\) is a generalized polynomial and \(g\) a generalized monomial then we still get \(f=0\) or \(g=0\) and via the reduction theorem extends to \(\mathcal{H}_{a,b}\). Next these results are carried forward to the case where \(g\) is a sum of certain symmetric k-additive function up to degree \(4\).
