Analytic number theory

From MaRDI portal

This elegant textbook is an excellent introduction to analytic number theory. In just 73 pages it gives easy proofs, from scratch, of the asymptotic formula for the partition function, the ErdΕ‘s-Fuchs theorem, Roth's theorem on integer sets containing no arithmetic progressions, the existence of \(g(k)\) in Waring's problem, the non-vanishing of \(\zeta(s)\) and \(L(s,\chi)\) on \(\sigma=1\), and the prime number theorem. The emphasis is very much on motivation. The book sets out to convince the beginner that the subject is beautiful, and not so very hard, -- in which it doubtless succeeds. This book can be recommended to good undergraduates, and as a `taster' for novices at any level. Each chapter has a few easy exercises, but, regrettably, there is no bibliography, and little reference to further work.
