Application of cryptographic methods in electronic bargaining
The paper gives a survey on cryptographic methods and procedures used within financial applications. The use of automatic teller machines for the distribution of cash, point of sale terminals, electronic commerce and data interchange, digital signatures etc. requires new security solutions. Symmetric and asymmetric crypto-algorithms are applied in order to establish confidentiality and authenticity of data. The Data Encryption Standard (DES) still is the most used symmetric algorithm with respect to enciphering and authentication in financial applications. The RSA-public key algorithm is used for generating digital signatures. Key exchange is realized by the Diffie-Hellman key exchange procedure. The latter asymmetric procedures are based on the factorization problem of large integers and the discrete logarithm problem in finite fields respectively. The realization of security demands for financial applications such as identification, authentication, data confidentiality, data integrity is discussed and corresponding tools such as chipcards are presented.
