Approximate isometries of Hilbert spaces

From MaRDI portal

Consider two real Hilbert spaces \(H\) and \(K\). The author proves the following result on approximate isometries: let \(f:H \rightarrow K\) be an \(\varepsilon\)-isometry, i.e.,\N\[\N|\|f(x)-f(y)\|-\|x-y\||\leq \varepsilon \ \ \ \forall x,y\in H.\N\]\NAssume also that \(f(0)=0\).\par Then there is a linear isometry \(U:H \rightarrow K\) such that \N\[\N\|P(f(x))-U(x)\|\leq 2\varepsilon \text{ and } \|f(x)-P(f(x))\|\leq\sqrt{6\varepsilon\|x\|+\varepsilon^2}\N\]\Nholds for every \(x\in H\), where \(P\) denotes the orthogonal projection of \(K\) onto the range of \(U\).
