Approximation of integral quantities in nuclear reactor physics

From MaRDI portal

A special general method in applied approximation based on spectral analysis is proposed and illustrated on a problem of nuclear reactor calculation. The general problem consists in approximating a scalar product \(S=\langle x,g\rangle\) where \(x\) is an unknown solution of the linear operator equation \(Ax=f\). The authors propose to express the functional \(S\) as follows: \(S=I+E\), where \(I=\langle X,g\rangle+\langle f-AX,Y\rangle+\langle V(f-AX),g-AY\rangle\) and \(E=\langle (A^{-1}-V)(f- AX),g-AY\rangle\) where \(X\) approximates the solution \(x\) and \(Y\) approximates a solution \(y\) of \(Ay=g\). The terms containing the operator \(V\) which approximates \(A^{-1}\) are new with respect to the Stacey form of \(S\). In practice \(V\) is taken as a polynomial in \(A\). Then \(| E|\) can be easily bounded by some norm product \(F\) and finally one obtains the inequality \(I-F\leq S\leq I+F\), i.e. the a priori lower and upper bounds for the approximate functional \(I\). The above method is applied in neutron transport theory (problem of the absorption blackness of an infinite slab in one group version), but it can also be applied to the diffusion model and generalized, for instance, to the cylindrical geometry. It is shown that the required accuracy is obtained more rapidly than in the multiple collision approach.
