Approximations of the harmonic numbers

From MaRDI portal

The authors study approximations to the harmonic numbers \N\[\NH_n:=\sum_{k=1}^n\frac{1}{k} \N\]\N for large \(n\). In particular, the aim of this paper is to improve somehow the upper and lower bounds \N\[ \Na-\ln\left(e^{1/(n+1)}-1\right)\le H_n<\gamma-\ln\left(e^{1/(n+1)}-1\right), \N\]\Nwhere \(\gamma\) is that Euler-Mascheroni constant and \(a:=1+\ln(\sqrt{e}-1)\), established by \textit{H. Alzer} [Expo. Math. 24, No. 4, 385--388 (2006; Zbl 1105.11003)], and valid for any natural number \(n\). By using a relation of \(H_n\) with the digamma function and some straightforward asymptotic approximations, the author derives the following upper and lower bound valid for any natural number \(n\): \N\[ \N\gamma-\ln\left(e^{1/(n+1)}-1\right)+a(n)< H_n<\gamma-\ln\left(e^{1/(n+1)}-1\right)+b(n), \N\]\Nwith \N\[\Na(n):=-\frac{1}{24(n+1)^2}, \hskip 2cm b(n):=a(n)+\frac{23}{2880(n+1)^4}. \N\]
