Automorphisms of the fine curve graph
The fine curve graph \(\mathcal{C}^{\dagger }(S)\) was recently introduded by \textit{J. Bowden} et al. [J. Am. Math. Soc. 35, No. 1, 211--231 (2022; Zbl 1511.20151)] as a combinatorial tool for studying Homeo\((S),\) the group of homeomorphisms of a surface \(S.\) Its vertices are essential simple closed curves in \(S\) and the edges are pairs of disjoint curves. The curves may be taken either to be smooth or merely topological; the two resulting curve graphs are quasi-isometric. In the present paper the vertices are taken to be topological curves. The main result of the paper is an analogue of the celebrated theorem of \textit{N. V. Ivanov} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1997, No. 14, 651--666 (1997; Zbl 0890.57018), Theorem 1], that the group of automorphisms of the curve complex of a closed, connected, orientable surface \(S_{g}\) of genus \(g\) is isomorphic to the mapping class group of \(S\) when \(g\geq 3.\) In our setting, the theorem proven by the authors is stated as follows:\N\N\textbf{Theorem}. Let \(S_{g}\) be a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus \(g.\) For \(g\geq 2\) the natural map\N\[\N\eta :\mathrm{Homeo}(S_{g})\rightarrow \Aut\mathcal{C}^{\dagger }(S_{g})\N\]\Nis an isomorphism.\N\NThe proof builds on earlier work of Farb and Margalit, who proved the analogous statement for the extended fine curve graph \(\mathcal{EC}^{\dagger }(S),\) whose vertices are all simple closed curves (including inessential ones), with adjacency defined by disjointness. In that broader context, one similarly shows that Homeo\((S)\) is isomorphic to \(\Aut\mathcal{EC}^{\dagger }(S),\) and then one deduces the version for \(\mathcal{C}^{\dagger }(S)\) by analyzing how inessential curves are encoded combinatorially.
