Basic hypergeometric identities derived from three-term relations
The paper presents an extension of \textit{A. Ebisu}'s 2015 framework for hypergeometric identities [Special values of the hypergeometric series. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2017; Zbl 1423.33004)] to the realm of basic hypergeometric series. By adapting the three-term relation technique originally devised for the classical \({}_2 F_{1}\) series, the authors successfully derive a suite of \({}_2\phi_1\) identities, covering both canonical results, such as the \(q\)-analogue of Gauss's summation, and several lesser-known formulas that have so far appeared only sporadically in the literature.\N\NThe author first establishes a set of linear recurrences for \({}_2\phi_1\) based on contiguous relations, then systematically solves these recurrences to obtain closed-form expressions. This systematic approach not only reproduces known identities but also uncovers novel transformations that enrich the existing catalogue of basic hypergeometric relations.\N\NIn addition to its technical contributions, the manuscript offers a valuable pedagogical perspective by juxtaposing the classical and \(q\)-analogue settings, thereby highlighting the structural parallels and divergences between \({}_2 F_{1}\) and \({}_2\phi_{1}\) series. The author provides explicit proofs for each derived identity, supported by concise examples that illustrate the practical utility of the results in combinatorial and number-theoretic contexts.
