Basin sensitivity via continuity of multiset-valued mappings

From MaRDI portal

The paper investigates the sensitivity of basins of attraction in numerical minimization methods when the objective function undergoes perturbations. It introduces and develops continuity properties for multiset-valued mappings, generalizing classical notions of continuity. The author applies these new continuity concepts to basin mappings, which associate parameters of the perturbed objective function with their corresponding basins of attraction. The author introduces the concept of grid continuity, a property tailored for numerical simulations where sampling is inherently finite. Connections between grid continuity and classical continuity properties are established, highlighting the relationship between truncated Lipschitz continuity and grid continuity. The results are illustrated through simulations, particularly in the context of steepest descent and Nelder-Mead methods.
