Bass modules and embeddings into free modules

From MaRDI portal

The main objective of this paper is to extend a result of \textit{H. Bass} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 95, 466--488 (1960; Zbl 0094.02201)], which states that any infinite descending chain of principal right ideals gives rise to a countably generated flat left module that is not projective. Such modules are referred to as \textit{Bass modules}. The aim of the authors is to construct the so-called \textit{generalized Bass modules}, which are countable direct limits that are not pure-projective, for any descending chain of positive primitive formulas. The authors' results originate from model-theoretic investigations on categoricity, saturation, and universality of free algebras of infinite rank in varieties in the sense of universal algebra.
