Beyond calculation. The next fifty years of computing
What will bring us the next (second) fifty years of computing? This is a question hardly be answered, any prognosis almost certainly fails. Some of the authors clearly see the risk and analyze it, others freely extrapolate from the past (first) fifty years. What are the benefits for the reader? Twenty (the flap announces twenty-one) authors known as experts in computing machinery and its applications (Bell and Gray, Cerf, Frankston, Dijkstra, Hamming, Weiser and Brown, Turkle, Norman, Gelernter, Alt, Abrahams, Winograd, Evans, Flores, Druffel, Mowshowitz, Chamberlin, Mitchell and Strimpel, Tsichritzis, Denning) write down their personal points of view on the theme, and so the reader gets from these essays an impression of the past and is guided to make his/her own analysis of the possible future of computing with all its scientific, social, and economic impact. The book has been published as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Association for Computing Machinery.
