Blocks with central hyperfocal subgroups

Let \(p\) be a prime and \(G\) a finite group. Let \(b\) be a \(p\)-block of \(G\) with maximal Brauer pair \((P, e_P)\) and let \(D\) be the hyperfocal subgroup of \(b\) [\textit{L. Puig}, Invent. Math. 141, No. 2, 365--397 (2000; Zbl 0957.20007)] with respect to \((P, e_P)\). Denote by \(l(b)\) the number of irreducible Brauer characters in \(b\) and set \(R = C_P(N_G(P, e_P)_{p'})\).\N\NThis short note proves that if \(D\) is central in \(P\), then \(l(b) = l(e_R)\), where \((R, e_R) \leq (P, e_P)\). This result generalizes an earlier result of \textit{I. Watanabe} [J. Algebra 416, 167--183 (2014; Zbl 1328.20018)] for abelian defect groups and connects to a conjecture of \textit{R. Rouquier} [in: Modular representation theory of finite groups. Proceedings of a symposium, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA, May 8--15, 1998. Berlin: de Gruyter. 101--146 (2001; Zbl 0998.20006)] on basic Rickard equivalences between \(kG b\) and \(kN_G(D) c\).\N\NThe proof proceeds by analyzing the control of the Brauer category \(\mathcal{F}_{(P,e_P)}(G, b)\) and studying lower defect groups via class sums and block decompositions. Under the assumption \(D \leq Z(P)\), one has \(P = D \times R\) and the Brauer category is controlled by \(N_G(P, e_P)\). A reduction to subgroups containing \(R\) allows the application of known results on blocks and hyperfocal subgroups to conclude that \(l(b) = l(e_R)\).\N\NAs a corollary, for \(p = 2\), the authors deduce that \(l(b) = l(b_0)\), where \(b_0\) is the Brauer correspondent of \(b\) in \(N_G(P)\).
