Butler modules over 1-dimensional Noetherian domains
Let \(R\) be a noetherian domain of Krull dimension one. The author defines a Butler module over \(R\) to be the torsion-free image of a finite rank completely decomposable module. In this work, the author establishes various characterizations and properties of these modules, one such property is that they are closed under quasi-isomorphism. Conditions are given for when \(R\)'s lattice of types is distributive, which results in a characterization for the class of Butler modules that are closed under the formation of pure submodules. When \(R=\mathbb Z\), these Butler modules become the well known class of Butler groups. One of the most important observations about Butler groups is that they coincide with the class of pure subgroups of finite rank completely decomposable groups. The author generalizes this characterization for his modules by showing that when \(R\) is analytically unramified then the class of Butler modules is the same as the class of pure submodules of finite rank completely decomposable modules if and only if for every maximal ideal \(P\) of \(R\), there is a unique maximal ideal lying over \(P\) in the integral closure of \(R\).
