Chern classes of fibered products of surfaces

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: In this paper we introduce a formula to compute Chern classes of fibered products of algebraic surfaces. For f, a generic projection to CP^2, of an algebraic surface X, we define X_k (for k smaller than degf) to be the k products of X over f minus the big diagonal. For k=degf, X_k is called the Galois cover of f w.r.t. full symmetric group. Let S be the branch curve of f. We give a formula for c_1^2 and c_2 of X_k, in terms of degf, degS, and the number of cusps, nodes and branch points of S. We apply the formula in 2 examples and add a conjecture concerning the spin structure of fibered products of Veronese surfaces.

Let \(X\) be a complex algebraic surface, \(f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2\) a generic projection of degree \(n\). For \(k\leq n\) the \(k\)-th Galois cover \(X_k\) can be defined as \(\overline{X\times_f\dots\times_fX-\Delta}\) where \(\Delta\) is the big diagonal and the fibered product is taken \(k\) times. A formula for \(c_1^2(X_k)\) and \(c_2(X_k)\) is given in this paper. For \(k=n\) (or \(n-1\)), \(X_k\) is called the full Galois cover of \(f\) with respect to the full symmetric group. In this case, the formulas were already known. The author applies the formula in two examples to obtain a surface with a high slope of \(c_1^2/c_2\). This paper is a preparation for the author's ongoing research to find more examples of non-diffeomorphic surfaces or surfaces in different deformation families with the same \(c_1^2\) and \(c_2\). Conjectures concerning the spin structure of fibered products of Veronese surfaces and their fundamental groups are also posed in this paper.
