Classification of connected shelves
This paper provides the first classification of shelves up to order \(5\). Shelves are magmas in which right multiplication is self-distributive. They generalize racks and quandles, which are algebraic structures used to construct knot invariants. Given a shelf \(S\), let \(M_S\) be the submonoid of \(\mathrm{End}(S)\) generated by the right-multiplication maps \(R_x(y)=y\ast x\). We say that \(S\) is connected if the action of \(M_S\) on \(S\) is transitive. In particular, we say that \(S\) is Latin if every left-multiplication map \(L_x(y)=x\ast y\) is invertible.\N\NIn the third author's GitHub repository, the authors classify all shelves up to order \(5\) and connected shelves up to order \(6\) up to isomorphism. They accomplish this using a recursive depth-first search algorithm in the set of matrices \(M_n(\mathbb{Z}_n)\). Generalizing quandle polynomials (see [\textit{S. Nelson}, J. Algebra Appl. 7, No. 2, 263--273 (2008; Zbl 1152.57015)]), the authors introduce shelf polynomials, which are polynomial-valued invariants \(P(S)\) of finite shelves \(S\).\N\NIn the article, the authors tabulate connected shelves up to order \(5\). For those up to order \(4\), the authors describe which are Latin, racks, or quandles and they compute the corresponding shelf polynomials. They state a conjectural value for \(P(S)\) in the case that \(S\) is idempotent and connected. Finally, for every Latin shelf \(S\) of order \(n\leq 5\), the authors compute the subgroup of \(S_n\) generated by \(X=\{L_x\mid x\in S\}\), the set of left-multiplication maps. The authors equip \(X\) with a natural shelf structure such that the canonical map \(S\to X\) is an epimorphism.\N\NIt should be noted that the authors occasionally refer to quandle axioms not listed in the paper. The second of these appears to be the involution axiom \((x\ast y)\ast y=x\), which does not generally hold for quandles.
