Complete mappings stabilizing a subgroup and their parities

From MaRDI portal

A complete mapping of a finite group \(G\) is a permutation \(\varphi:G\to G\) such that \(x\mapsto x\varphi(x)\) is also a permutation. The paper studies the parity of complete mappings and reduces the problem of determining whether a finite group admits both even and odd complete mappings to the existence of complete mappings that stabilize suitable subgroups.\N\NThe Hall-Paige conjecture asked whether a finite group admits a complete mapping if and only if its Sylow \(2\)-subgroups are trivial or non-cyclic. This conjecture has been proved by \textit{M.~Hall} and \textit{L.~J.~Paige} [Pac. J. Math. 5, 541--549 (1955; Zbl 0066.27703)], \textit{S.~Wilcox} [J. Algebra 321, 1407--1428 (2009; Zbl 0066.27703)] and \textit{J.~N.~Bray} et al. [J. Algebra 545, 27--42 (2020; Zbl 1485.20002)]. The paper builds on this result and introduces complete mappings stabilizing a subgroup as a tool to transfer parity properties from subgroups to the whole group.\N\NOne of the main results establishes that every finite solvable group with trivial or non-cyclic Sylow \(2\)-subgroups admits a complete mapping that stabilizes a Sylow \(2\)-subgroup. The paper then reduces the existence problem for such stabilizing mappings in arbitrary finite groups to the case of finite simple groups. It proves that alternating groups and a specified family of sporadic simple groups admit complete mappings stabilizing Sylow \(2\)-subgroups and derives a reduction to finite simple groups of Lie type and certain Ree groups.\N\NCombining these results, the paper shows that, under the stated reduction hypotheses, a finite group with trivial or non-cyclic Sylow \(2\)-subgroups admits both even and odd complete mappings, with explicitly described exceptional cases.
