Computer-Mathematik.
This is one more book on numerical methods. It covers all standard topics like zeroes of polynomials, nonlinear equations, systems of linear equations, interpolation, extrapolation, splines, numerical integration and differential equations. All well known methods are explained and proven, and there are also some less well known ones, i.e. the algorithm of Nickel for solving polynomial equations. Much emphasis is put on how to implement the procedures on electronic computers. There is one separate chapter about arithmetic with limited accuracy, rounding errors and stability of numerical expressions, and another one on how to implement numerically stable procedures for elementary operations like quadratic equations, rational arithmetic, complex numbers, matrix operations, infinite series and arithmetic on arbitrary long integers. Every major algorithm is given as a complete program in PASCAL, and many more are posed as exercises. Besides, there are lots of exercises, mostly interesting and challenging, and a second volume with solutions is available. The last chapter gives some hints on how to convert the PASCAL-implementations to less powerful devices like programmable desktop calculators and how to circumvent recursive procedures. The presentation is elementary and does not presume more than undergraduate courses in analysis. The authors aim is to promote the use of computers as a fascinating new problem solving instrument in high schools.
