Conics in cubic structure

From MaRDI portal

A cubic structure is a pair \((Q,\, [\,])\), where \(Q\) is a non-empty set consisting of points, and \([\,]\subseteq Q^3\) is a ternary relation on \(Q\), so that the following three conditions hold.\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[C1)] For any two points \(a, b\in Q\), there is a unique point \(c\in Q\) such that \([a, b, c]\) holds.\N\item[C2)] The ternary relation \([\,]\) is totally symmetric.\N\item[C3)] If \([a, b, c]\), \([d, e, f]\), \([g, h, i]\), \([a, d, g]\) and \([b, e, h]\) hold, then \([c, f, i]\) also holds.\N\end{itemize}\NIn this paper, the concept of conic in a cubic structure \((Q,\, [\,])\) is introduced as a set of six points \(a, b, c, d, e, f\in Q\) so that there exist three points \(g,h,i\in Q\) such that \([a, b, g]\), \([c, d, h]\), \([e, f, i]\) and \([g, h, i]\) hold. Different relations among distinct types of points in a conic are then enumerated throughout the paper, with particular emphasis on inflection points, tangential points, quadrilaterals and triads in cubic structures of ranks \(1\), \(2\) and \(3\). Different configurations of points, lines and conics are also constructed.
