Constrained Approximation in Sobolev Spaces

From MaRDI portal

The authors introduce a new and quite interesting concept in constrained approximation, the concept of intertwining approximation. Given a function \(f\in L_p[-1,1]\) and a finite set of points \(Y_s: =\{y_0:= -1<y_1< \cdots <y_s<1=: y_{s+1}\}\), \(s\geq 0\), a pair of polynomials \(P\) and \(Q\) are said to intertwine with \(f\) on \(Y_s\), if \[ \text{sgn} \bigl(P (x)-f(x)\bigr) =\text{sgn} \bigl(f(x)- Q(x)\bigr)= (-1)^i, \quad y_i\leq x\leq y_{i+1},\;i=0, \dots,s. \] The degree of intertwining approximation of \(f\) by polynomials of degree \(\leq n\) associated with the set \(Y_s\), is defined by \(\widetilde E_n(f,Y_s)_p: =\inf |P-Q |_p\), where the infimum is taken over all polynomial pairs \(P\) and \(Q\) of degree \(\leq n\) which intertwine with \(f\) on \(Y_s\). The authors obtain estimates on the degree of intertwining approximation involving the Ditzian-Totik moduli of smoothness of \(f\) and the \(\tau\)-moduli. They also have pointwise estimates when \(f\in C[-1,1]\). They show that their estimates are best possible in that for higher moduli they can produce counterexamples. The numerous results are too many to detail here so we would only like to point out that in particular if \(f=0\), then intertwining approximation becomes one-sided approximation and some of the estimates are new also in that case. Also, if \(f\) changes sign exactly at the points \(Y_s\), then obviously \(P\) is copositive with \(f\). Thus the estimates are related to those in copositive approximation and the latter subject is also extensively investigated in this paper.
