Covering a rectangle with isosceles right triangles

From MaRDI portal

The authors show that a rectangle of sides \(a\) and \(b\) can be covered with right isosceles triangles provided the total area of these triangles is at least \(\frac{1}{2}(a+b)^2\) provided \(b \leq a \leq \sqrt2 b\), and \(\frac{1}{4}(a+2b)^2\) for \(a > \sqrt2 b\). The proof is based on Theorem 7 of the paper by \textit{J. W. Moon} and \textit{L. Moser} [Colloq. Math. 17, 103--110 (1967; Zbl 0152.39502)].
