Database systems. Concepts and techniques of implementation
This book treats the implementation of database systems, that is, how to do it, which functionality to provide, which algorithms and data structures can be used. The authors first give a framework for their representation consisting of the ANSI-Sparc 3-layer-architecture and a layer modell, which corresponds to the first three of the major parts of the book: storage system, access system and data system. The last part handles transaction management. The techniques presented here are suitable primarily for centralized database systems, but special algorithms for object-oriented, distributed and other database systems are added. The reader will find most of the material covered in many books on database systems, but much more comprehensive. Every technique is discussed together with its variants, its respective advantages and disadvantages are shown in connection with the circumstances of its application. Questions concerning performance are treated with simulations or practical experience. Foundations which are not mainly belonging to database techniques are treated as well: functioning of storage media, indirect addressing, segmentation e.g. Some main headings of the table of contents are: Architecture of database systems, files and blocks, DB-buffer management, one-dimensional access paths, multi-dimensional access paths, implementation of relational operators, query optimization, code generation, synchronization, logging and recovery, nested transactions. The book ends with an outlook on SQL3, universal storage, heterogeneous relational data and new architectures. Many figures and tables are given, most of them can be downloaded from the internet. Despite the vast amount of material of course many things are not or not deeply handled, but it seems hard to imagine that there might be no help in the extensive literature.
