Dendrites and light open mappings
The authors prove the following two characterizations of dendrites which subsume results of \textit{J. Mioduszewski} [Pr. Mat. 5, 73-77 (1961; Zbl 0106.16104)] and \textit{G. T. Whyburn} [Analytic topology, Colloq. Publ., Am. Math. Soc. 28 (1948; Zbl 0036.12402)]. Theorem 1. A metric continuum \(X\) is a dendrite if and only if for every compact space \(Y\) and for every light open mapping \(f: Y\to f(Y)\) with \(X\subseteq f(Y)\) there exists a homeomorphic copy \(X'\) of \(X\) in \(Y\) such that the restriction \(f|_{X'}: X'\to f (X')= X\) is a homeomorphism. Theorem 2. A metric continuum is a dendrite if and only if for every compact space \(Y\) and for every continuous 0-dimensional multifunction \(F: X\to 2^Y\) there exists a continuous selection \(f: X\to Y\) of \(F\).
