Design of composite plates of extremal rigidity

From MaRDI portal

The problem of optimal design of a composite Kirchhoff plate is analyzed. The aim is to obtain the composites that are optimal in the sense that the associated elastic energy density is extremal. The plate is assumed to be assembled from two isotropic materials characterized by different values of their elastic moduli, the amount of each material is given. The optimal microstructures and optimal distribution of the materials throughout the plate are found for the case when only two materials are used in design. Explicit expressions for the bounds on the elastic energy density of composites are derived and their structures are analyzed. It is shown that, the value of elastic energy associated with the optimal matrix composites equals the energy of some isotropic materials whose elastic moduli do not depend on the stress state and are determined by only bulk and shear moduli of the first and second materials as well as the volume fraction. The energy bounds obtained for the composites with extremal rigidity are used to solve a number of optimal design problems of rectangular plate with a constant volume fraction of the first phase throughout the plate. The results of numerical calculations are discussed and the effect of optimization is analyzed. The final part of the paper addresses the optimal design of a composite plate assuming that the set of available materials includes more (may be even infinitely many) phases. In this case some integral characteristic of this material set is fixed. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0870.00018].
