Dieudonné completeness of function spaces
This paper is about the Dieudonné completeness of spaces of continuous functions into a uniform space endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on a bornology with a closed base. It also contains a generalization of the Eberlein-Šmulian theorem.\N\NTheorem 3.4 of the paper states that, for a Tychonoff space \(X\) with a bornology \(\lambda\) that has a closed base and a metric space \((Y, \rho)\), if \(X\) is functionally generated with respect to \(Y\) by \(\sigma\lambda\), then \(C_{\lambda, \rho}(X, Y)\) is Dieudonné complete. Here, \(\sigma \lambda\) denotes the family of countable unions of sets from \(\lambda\) and \(C_{\lambda, \rho}(X,Y)\) is the set of continuous functions \(X \to Y\) with the topology of \(\rho\)-uniform convergence on sets of \(\lambda\). Moreover, \(X\) is said to be functionally generated by \(\sigma\lambda\) with respect to \(Y\) if, for every discontinuous \(f : X \to Y\), there is \(A \in \sigma \lambda\) such that the restriction \(f|_A\) cannot be extended to a \(Y\)-valued continuous function on \(X\).\N\NTheorem 3.9 of the paper shows that \(X = [0,\omega_1]\) with the order topology and the bornology \(\lambda\) generated by all countable compact subsets of \(X\) witnesses the failure of the converse to Theorem 3.4. In particular, \(C_\lambda(X)\), the space of continuous functions \(X \to \mathbb R\) endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on \(\lambda\), is Dieudonné complete but \(X\) is not functionally generated by \(\sigma\lambda\) with respect to \(\mathbb R\).\N\NFor the generalization of the Eberlein-Šmulian theorem, it is said that a locally convex topology \(\tau\) on a normed linear space \((X, \|\cdot\|)\) is compatible for the pair \((X,X')\), where \(X'\) is the continuous dual of \(X\), if the continuous dual of \((X,\tau)\) is identical as a vector space to \(X'\). Then Theorem 4.5 states that, for a Banach space \((X, \|\cdot\|)\), a locally convex topology \(\tau\) on \(X\) compatible for the pair \((X, X')\), and \(A \subseteq X\), the following are equivalent with respect to \((X, \tau)\):\N\begin{itemize}\N\item \(A\) is relatively compact;\N\item \(A\) is relatively sequentially compact;\N\item \(A\) is relatively countably compact;\N\item \(A\) is topologically bounded.\N\end{itemize}
