Discrete vertices in simplicial objects internal to a monoidal category
This paper follows \textit{M. Aguiar} [Internal categories and quantum groups. Cornell University ProQuest Dissertations \& Theses (1997), \url{https://ncatlab.org/nlab/files/Aguiar_InternalCategoriesAndQuantumGroups.pdf}], introducing simplicial objects internal to a monoidal category as certain colax monoidal functors. The paper compares three approaches. Throughout the paper the author lets \((\mathcal{V},\otimes,I)\) be a fixed cocomplete and finitely complete monoidal category such that the monoidal product \(-\otimes-\) preserves coproducts in each variable.\N\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[1.] One can consider the category \(\mathrm{Colax}_{b}(\Delta_{f}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathcal{V})\) of based colax monoidal functors.\N\item[2.] Assume first that \(\mathcal{V}\) is cartesian. \textit{J. Lurie} [``(Infinity,2)-Categories and the Goodwillie Calculus I, Preprint, \url{arXiv:0905.0462}] introduced enriched Segal precategories in order to define an enriched variant of classical Segal categories [\textit{A. Hirschowitz} and \textit{C. Simpson}, ``Descente pour les n-champs (Descent for n-stacks), Preprint, \url{arXiv:math/9807049}]. They were further investigated in [\textit{C. Simpson}, Homotopy theory of higher categories. From Segal categories to \(n\)-categories and beyond. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2012; Zbl 1232.18001)]. In this case the discretization of the vertices is achieved by replacing the simplicial category \(\Delta\) by a labelled analogue \(\Delta_{S}\) for a given set \(S\). One then considers functors\N\[\N\Delta_{S}^{\mathrm{op}}\rightarrow\mathcal{V}\N\]\Ninstead, yielding the category \(\mathrm{PC}(\mathcal{V})\). \textit{H. V. Bacard} [Theory Appl. Categ. 35, 1227--1267 (2020; Zbl 1443.18002)] considered a generalization of this approach for general \(\mathcal{V}\), also using colax functors.\N\item[3.] \textit{W. Lowen} and the named author [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 25, No. 2, 1029--1074 (2025; Zbl 1565.18009)] introduced templicial objectsin order to define an enriched version of \textit{A. Joyal}'s quasi-categories [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 175, No. 1--3, 207--222 (2002; Zbl 1015.18008)]. The named author studies the category \(S_{\otimes}\mathcal{V}\) of colax monoidal functors of the form\N\[\N\Delta_{f}^{\mathrm{op}}\rightarrow\mathcal{V}\mathrm{Quiv}_{S}\N\]\N\end{itemize}\N\NThe synopsis of the paper goes as follows.\N\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[\S 2] makes the case that passing to colax monoidal functors \(\Delta_{f}^{\mathrm{op}}\rightarrow\mathcal{V}\) is necessary in the context of non-cartesian monoidal categories. The main argument is that this allows to define well-behaved nerves of -enriched categories, which leads the author to consider templicial objects.\N\N\item[\S 3] compares approaches 1 and 3, identifying conditions on \(\mathcal{V}\) for which they are equivalent. The author calls \(\mathcal{V}\) \textit{decomposing} if it abides by these conditions (Definition 3.10), establishing (Theorem 3.21)\N\[\NS_{\otimes}\mathcal{V}\simeq\mathrm{Colax}_{b}(\Delta_{f}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathcal{V})\N\]\N\N\item[\S 4] compares approaches 2 and 3. In the cartesian case, \textit{C. Simpson} [Homotopy theory of higher categories. From Segal categories to \(n\)-categories and beyond. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2012; Zbl 1232.18001)] introduced the conditions (DISJ) on \(\mathcal{V}\) under which\N\[\N\mathrm{PC}(\mathcal{V})\simeq S_{b}\mathcal{V}\N\]\NIt is shown that (DISJ) implies decomposing for \(\mathcal{V}\), so that under (DISJ)\ all three approaches are equivalent (Corollary 4.10). Finally it is shown that for \(\mathcal{V}=\mathrm{Mod}(k)\), the templicial dg-nerve \(dg\mathrm{Cat}_{k}\rightarrow S_{\otimes}\mathrm{Mod}(k)\) from [\textit{W. Lowen} and \textit{A. Mertens}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2025, No. 13, Article ID rnaf178, 42 p. (2025; Zbl 08103246)] does not factor through \(\mathrm{PC}(\mathrm{Mod}(k))\) (Example 4.15).\N\end{itemize}
