This book is notable in that it is the only one written that provides an account of the dislocation foundation of fracture mechanics and presents solutions for cracks in elasto-plastic solids. The books on fracture mechanics generally overlook the dislocation foundation of cracks, though those on dislocations report that the cracks can be modeled with dislocations. This book covers simultaneously the basic concepts of cracks and dislocations, and presents various solutions for cracks in elasto-plastic solids, but does not address the cracks in thermoelastic and/or piezoelectric, polar, nonlocal and alike solids. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book contains 10 chapters with homework problems, 7 appendices and more than two hundred references mainly from the western literature. Chapter 1 is restricted to stress and displacement fields in Griffith-Inglis and Zener-Stroch-Koehler crack theories. Chapter 2 gives an adequate background for the application of dislocations to crack problems. Chapter 3 contains Hilbert transforms and Muskhelishvili equations which are needed for the crack solutions in elastic solids. Chapter 4 treats the Bilby-Cottrell-Swinden-Dugdale cracks in one-dimensional plastic zone at the crack tip by use of Muskhelishvili equations. Also, from these equations, the amounts of dislocation crack tip shielding or antishielding are obtained in chapter 5. The following three chapters present the dislocation-generated solutions for infinitely long cracks in isotropic elasto-plastic solids. Specifically, chapter 6 deals with solutions of the problem of formation of a plastic zone at a crack tip of mode III crack, chapter 7 with those at a crack tip of mode II crack, and chapter 8 with those at a crack tip of mode I crack. Chapter 9 considers the stress field of moving Yoffe cracks; here the last section discusses some interesting fracture applications such as crevasses and dikes, interface cracks, unstable slippage and fatigue crack propagation. In appendices, tables of Hilbert transforms, useful integrals for crack problems and useful equations are given, the stress fields of dislocations are recorded, and the dislocations in stress space are reported. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEEvidently, the book is a valuable contribution in the field of fracture mechanics, its presentation is clear enough to be accessible to graduate students, and it is highly recommended to researchers and practicing engineers.
