ECO:a methodology for the enumeration of combinatorial objects

From MaRDI portal

This paper presents a very general method for recursively constructing various classes of combinatorial objects: Suppose we are given a class \(S\) which is graded by the values of some parameter \(p\)---for example, \(S\) could be the class of all permutations with \(p\) equal to the number of letters in the permutation. Given such a class, the authors are, in some cases, able to deduce a functional equation which is satisfied by a multivariate generating function for \(S\). Solving that equation then leads to explicit formulas which enumerate the class according to various statistics. The authors apply the method to several classes of objects which are enumerated by classical sequences such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers. The method recovers some classical bijections---e.g., between Dyck paths counted by number of peaks and peak height on the one hand, and parallelogram polyominoes counted by number of columns and column length on the other---as well as some new ones.
