Endomorphisms of a separable primary group
A long standing problem in the theory of abelian \(p\)-groups is to characterise the groups \(G\) having a basic subgroup \(B=\bigoplus_{i\in \mathbb N} B_i\) such that \(B\leq G\leq \widehat B\), the completion of \(B\) in the \(p\)-adic topology, and \(G\) is a pure subgroup of the torsion subgroup \(\overline B\) of \(\widehat B\). Here each \(B_i\) is a direct sum of cyclic \(p\)-groups of order \(p^{n_i}\) for an increasing sequence \(n_i\) and \(\overline B\) is the group of bounded sequences in \(\prod_i B_i\).\N\NThe advance made by the author is to describe an unexpected property of the endomorphism ring \(E\) of \(G\). Let \(a=(b_i\colon i\in \mathbb N) \in G\) with \(pa=0\) and \(\alpha\in E\). Then either \(\alpha a\in\langle a\rangle\) or \[\alpha a=\alpha b_1+\cdots +\alpha b_k\] for some finite index \(k\).
