Equilibrium measures for two-sided shift spaces via dimension theory

From MaRDI portal

The authors consider two-sided shift spaces with a finite alphabet and a continuous potential. Their interest is in determining conditions for equilibrium measures. The setting here is a compact metric space \(X\) with a continuous map \(f: X \rightarrow X\) and a continuous potential function \(\varphi : X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}\). An \(f\)-invariant Borel probability measure \(\mu\) on \(X\) is said to be an equilibrium measure if it maximizes \(h_\mu (f) + \int \varphi d\mu,\) where \(h_\mu (f)\) is the measure-theoretic entropy.\N\NIn this paper the authors consider two-sided shift spaces that are not necessarily subshifts of finite type. They offer some general conditions for which a dimension theoretic construction of leaf measures can be used to construct an equilibrium measure with a local product structure. The main theorem here is as follows: If \(X\) is a two-sided shift space on a finite alphabet with the specification property, and \(\varphi: X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) is a continuous potential function with the Walters property, then the unique equilibrium measure \(\mu\) for \((X, \varphi)\) has a local product structure. \N\NThe specification property is described, for example, in [\textit{R. Bowen}, Math. Systems Theory 8, No. 3, 193--202 (1974/1975; Zbl 0299.54031)], and the Walters property is introduced in [\textit{P. Walters}, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 236, 127--153 (1978; Zbl 0375.28009)].
