An operator A on a Banach space X is \(\phi\)-summable on X if \(\| \phi (\epsilon A)f-f\|_ X\to 0\) as \(| \epsilon | \to 0\) for all f in X, in some domain D contained in the set of complex numbers \({\mathbb{C}}\). Two operators A and B on X are \(\phi\)-equisummable from X into a Banach space Y if \(\| \phi (\epsilon A)f-\phi (\epsilon B)f\|_ Y\to 0\) as \(| \epsilon | \to 0\) for all f in X. In this paper the author presents some abstract criteria for equisummability of expansions in eigenfunctions of certain pairs of elliptic operators on general domains of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\). The author applies these criteria to give a simple proof of an equisummability result of \textit{D. Gurarie} and \textit{M. A. Kon} [in Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 11, 151-162 (1983; Zbl 0528.35031)] for a certain class of elliptic operators whose leading terms are positive and lower order terms have coefficients which are singular on a nowhere dense set.
