Essential Java 2 fast
The book is exactly what its title says. It is a very short and automatically not very deep representation of the most important concepts of Java 2 (Sun's Java Development Kit JDK 1.2). It describes the core language and parts of Java's extensive hierarchy of classes and shows how they can be used. As a language reference the book is not well suited. Its contents and its index are much to small to give proper language references. Furthermore, it contains no hints to further readings and no exercises. So it cannot be used well as a tutorial for beginners. However, it contains many informative examples which are not too complex. So it gives a handy first entry into the programming with Java 2 for people with some programming experience. The book assumes that readers have used a high level language such as Pascal, C or Ada before. A knowledge of C or even C++ will be an advantage but is not essential. With such a prerequisite the book is useful as a starting point for programming with Java 2. It offers a first practical idea -- and no more.
