Exponential approximation of band-limited functions from nonuniform sampling by regularization methods
This paper studies the problem of reconstructing a band-limited signal from a nonuniform sample, and is organized as follows: The introductory Section 1 begins with a discussion of the classical Whittaker-Kotelnikov-Shannon sampling theorem, then considers functions band-limited to \([-\sigma, \sigma]\) with \(\sigma < \pi\) (so that the sampling rate of the uniform samples \(\{ f(n); n \in Z\}\) is strictly larger than the Nyquist sampling rate), and cites numerous references that show that the convergence rate of regularized sampling series, with a regularizer of the form \(G_N(x)=\exp(-ax^2)\) (where \(a>0\) is specifically given and depends on both \(\sigma\) and \(N\)), can achieve exponential convergence rates. After discussing the existing literature on irregular sampling the authors state the purpose of the paper, which is to study a general sampling sequence of the form \(\Lambda=\{\lambda_n; n \in Z\}\) and use complex analysis methods to analyze the convergence rate of the regularized sampling series\N\[\N\mathcal{G}_Nf(z)=\sum_{n=-N}^N f(\lambda_n)\varphi_{\Lambda_n, n}(z)G_N(z-\lambda_n),\N\]\Nwhere \(\varphi_{\Lambda_n, n}\) is a certain canonical product and \(\mathcal{G}_N\) is a Gaussian or hyper-Gaussian function, and show that exponential convergence rates can be achieved in this case as well. In Section 2, the authors express the approximation error \(f(z)-\mathcal{G}_N f(z)\) as a contour integral. Error estimates for Gaussian and hyper-Gaussian regularizers \(G_N\) are given in Sections 3 and 4, respectively. Section 5 presents several examples of nonuniform sampling sequences such that exponential approximation is achieved; a lower bound for the perturbed sampling sequences is also given. Section 6 contains the results of numerical experiments that corroborate the theoretical results obtained. Finally, conclusions and discussion are presented in Section 7.
