Extending of partial metrics

From MaRDI portal

The authors address the problem of extending a compatible partial metric \(p : A^2 \to \mathbb{R}\) defined on a closed subset \(A\) of a partially metrizable space \(X\) to a compatible partial metric on all of \(X\). This question parallels the classical Hausdorff-Bing theorem on the extension of metrics.\N\NTo handle the asymmetric framework, the authors first consider the related problem of extending a compatible quasi-pseudometric from a closed subset of a quasi-metrizable space. They obtain a positive result under a boundedness condition: if the given quasi-pseudometric \(q\) is dominated by a compatible quasi-pseudometric on \(X\), or equivalently if \(q\) is bounded, then \(q\) admits a weakly compatible extension to \(X\). Using this, they prove that every bounded compatible quasi-metric \(q_p(x, y) = p(x, y) - p(x, x)\) associated to a partial metric \(p\) extends to a compatible partial metric on \(X\).\N\NThe proof employs a sequence of constructive steps: an adaptation of Bing's technique for extending metrics, the introduction of the notion of \textit{weakly compatible quasi-pseudometrics}, and the use of McShane's extension theorem for Lipschitz functions to reconstruct a partial metric from an extended quasi-metric and a 1-Lipschitz function \(f(x) = p(x,x)\). The paper also contains an instructive example demonstrating that, in general, without the boundedness (or weak compatibility) assumption, such extensions need not exist.\N\NThe article is clearly written and logically organized. It provides a natural continuation of the authors' earlier work on the topology and metrizability of partial metric spaces [\textit{V. Mykhaylyuk} and \textit{V. Myronyk}, Topology Appl. 270, Article ID 106925, 14 p. (2020; Zbl 1434.54006); ibid. 308, Article ID 107949, 13 p. (2022; Zbl 1483.54014)]. The results extend known extension theorems for metrics and quasi-metrics to the asymmetric and partial contexts, contributing to the theory of quasi-metrizable and partially metrizable spaces.
