Extremal problems in the theory of analytic continuation

From MaRDI portal

For any sequence \(\lambda=(\lambda_{n})_{n=1}^\infty\subset(0,+\infty)\) with \(\lambda_{n}\nearrow+\infty\), put \(h(\lambda):= \liminf_{n\to+\infty}(\lambda_{n+1}-\lambda_{n})\), \(D(\lambda):=\limsup_{n\to+\infty}\frac{n}{\lambda_{n}}\), \(L_{\lambda}(z):=\prod_{n=1}^\infty(1-\frac{z^2}{\lambda_{n}^2})\), \(\delta(\lambda):=\limsup_{n\to+\infty}\frac{1}{\lambda_{n}} \log\frac{1}{|L'_{\lambda}(\lambda_{n})|}=\) the condensation index of \(\lambda\). Define \(\Delta(h,D):= \sup\{\delta(\lambda)\: h(\lambda)=h, D(\lambda)=D\}\). For \(h, D>0\) with \(hD\leq 1\), let \(s:=(hD)^{-1}\), \(a:=s-\sqrt{s^2-s+1/2}\). The main result of the paper is the following formula: \(\Delta(h,D)= D(a\log\frac{2s-a}{a}+(1-a)\log\frac{2s-1-a}{1-a}+2(s-a)\log \frac{2s-a}{2s-a-1})\). Let \(\ell(D)\) denote the supremum of all \(\ell>0\) such that there exist a sequence \(\lambda\subset\mathbb N\) with \(D(\lambda)=D\) and a function of the form \(f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_{n}\exp(\lambda_{n}z)\) with \(\limsup_{n\to+\infty}|a_{n}|^{1/\lambda_{n}}=1\) such that \(f\) extends holomorphically to a neighborhood of the rectangle \([0,\ell]\times[-\pi D,\pi D]\). The author proves that \(\ell(D)>D\log\frac{\root{4}\of{128}}{\pi D}\) for \(0<D\leq 1/6\).
