Finite Groups of 2 × 2 Integer Matrices
From MaRDI portal
The author seeks for all finite subgroups of the group \(\text{GL}(2,Z)\), which is the group of nonsingular \(2\times 2\) matrices with integer coefficients whose inverses also have integer entries. The answer is well known, see for example \textit{M. Newman} [Integral Matrices (Academic Press, 1972; Zbl 0254.15009)]; aiming at an elementary proof, the author succeeds in providing an interesting argument, completely accessible to the undergraduates.
