Finitely generated vector sublattices
In an earlier paper [Stud. Econ. Theory 2, 171-177 (1991; Zbl 0792.90020)], \textit{D. J. Brown}, \textit{C. B. Huijsmans} and \textit{B. de Pagter} showed that the vector sublattice of an Archimedean vector lattice \(E\) that is generated by two elements \(f,g\in E^+\) can be described as the linear span of the elements \(\{(\alpha f+\beta g)^+:\alpha, \beta\in\mathbb{R}\}\). In the present paper, the author shows that in the vector lattice of the continuous functions on the first octant of \(\mathbb{R}^3\) the function \(f(x,y,z)= ((x\wedge y)- z)^+\) is not in the linear span of \(\{(\alpha x+\beta y+\gamma z)^+:\alpha, \beta,\gamma\in \mathbb{R}\}\), whereas \(f\) is an element of the vector sublattice generated by the coordinate functions. In the same section, he shows that the Brown-Huijsmans-de Pagter result does not necessarily hold for any pair of (not necessarily positive) elements. In the final section of this paper, the author provides a proof of the fact that the Archimedean vector lattices for which every finitely generated vector sublattice is finite-dimensional are precisely the hyper-Archimedean vector lattices. The author's proof of the latter results uses the axiom of choice and he refers to an unpublished manuscript by L. C. Moore for a constructive proof. He also proves as a by-product that Archimedean vector lattices are hyper-Archimedean and uniformly complete if and only if they are hyper-Archimedean and disjoint-\(\sigma\)-complete.
