Finiteness of reductions of Hecke orbits
Set \(K\) be a characteristic zero local field with ring of integers \(\mathcal{O}_K\) and algebraic closure \(\bar{K}.\) For a \(p\)-divisible group \(\mathcal{G}\) over \(\mathcal{O}_K,\) the \textit{Hecke orbit} of \(\mathcal{G}\) is the set of isomorphism classes of \(p\)-divisible groups defined over \(\bar{K}\) which are isogeneous to \(\mathcal{G}_{\bar{K}}.\)\N\NIn the paper, the authors pose the following conjecture: for any \(p\)-divisible group \(\mathcal{G}\) over \(\mathcal{O}_K,\) the \textit{reduction} of its Hecke orbit (meaning the set of reductions of the \(p\)-divisible groups in the Hecke orbit) is finite.\N\NThe authors are able to prove two special cases of the conjecture. Their very concrete Theorem 1.1 proves that only finitely many supersingular abelian varieties (of a fixed dimension) over \(\bar{\mathbb{F}_p}\) admit CM lifts. Their Theorem 1.5 proves the finiteness conjecture when the \(p\)-adic Galois representation associated to \(\mathcal{G}\) is semisimple.\N\NTheir proof is quite short and pleasant to read. Using work of Serre and Sen, the authors prove a Galois-theoretic condition which implies finiteness of the reduction of the Hecke orbit of a \(p\)-divisible group. They then quite cleverly show that, even when this Galois-theoretic condition does not directly apply to their candidate \(\mathcal{G},\) they can construct another \(\mathcal{G}'\) which is isomorphic to \(\mathcal{G}\) over \(\bar{K}\) but for which the condition applies.\N\NThe authors also prove a related finiteness result for supersingular K3 surfaces (their Theorem 1.2), by combining their Theorem 1.1 with refinements of some existing work on K3 surfaces over \(\bar{\mathbb{F}_p}.\)
