Fishing for complements
A classic result by Bongartz shows that for every partial tilting module \(M\) in \(\mathbf{mod}(A)\), where \(A\) is a finite-dimensional algebra, there exists a module \(N\) such that \(M\oplus N\) is a tilting module in \(\mathbf{mod}(A)\) (see [\textit{K. Bongartz}, Lect. Notes Math. 903, 26--38 (1981; Zbl 0478.16025)]). Over the years, this result has been proven in different contexts under the name of Bongartz completion.\N\NIn the reviewed paper, the authors find necessary and sufficient conditions for completing a partial silting object to a silting object. Specifically, in the context of large silting objects from [\textit{C. Psaroudakis} and \textit{J. Vitória}, Math. Z. 288, No. 3--4, 965--1028 (2018; Zbl 1407.18014)], the authors prove that, for an algebraic and compactly generated triangulated category, a large partial silting object \(X\) admits a Bongartz completion if and only if there exists a large silting object \(S\) such that \(M\geq X \geq M[n]\) for some \(n>0\) (where \(\geq\) is a relation based on [\textit{T. Aihara} and \textit{O. Iyama}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 85, No. 3, 633--668 (2012; Zbl 1271.18011)]). A similar result is also proved in the context of classical silting objects from [\textit{B. Keller} and \textit{D. Vossieck}, Bull. Soc. Math. Belg., Sér. A 40, No. 2, 239--253 (1988; Zbl 0671.18003)]. It states that in a triangulated category where \(\mathbf{add}(T)\) is precovering for every object \(T\), a presilting object \(X\) admits Bongartz completion if, and only if, there exists a silting object \(M\) such that the intersection of the coaisles of the co-t-structures induced by \(X\) and \(M\) is a coaisle and \(\mathbf{add}(M)\geq \mathbf{add}(X)\).\N\NAs an application of the above, the authors recover results previously obtained for classical silting objects over hereditary abelian categories or over silting-discrete algebras.
