Fixed-point posets of groups and Euler characteristics

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a group, let \(\Omega\) be a \(G\)-set and let \(\mathcal{X}\) be a set of subgroups of \(G\) closed under \(G\)-conjugacy. The paper introduces the fixed-point poset\N\[\N\mathcal{X}_{\Omega}=\{\mathrm{Fix}_{\Omega}(X)\mid X\in\mathcal{X}\},\N\]\Nordered by set-theoretic containment and studies its Euler characteristic. This places the construction in the line of work stemming from [\textit{K. S. Brown}, Invent. Math. 29, 1--5 (1975; Zbl 0294.20048); \textit{D. Quillen}, Adv. Math. 28, 101--128 (1978; Zbl 0388.55007)].\N\NOne of the main results shows that if \(p\) is a prime and \(\mathcal{X}\) is a non-empty subgroup-closed set of finite non-trivial \(p\)-subgroups of bounded order, closed under \(G\)-conjugacy, such that \(\mathcal{X}_{\Omega}\) is finite, \(\mathrm{c}_{\Omega}(X)\) is finite for all \(X\in\mathcal{X}\) and \(NX\in\mathcal{X}\) whenever \(X,Y\in\mathcal{X}\) and \(N\) is a \(p\)-subgroup of \(\mathrm{c}_{\Omega}(Y)\) normalized by \(X\), then \(\chi(\mathcal{X}_{\Omega})\equiv 1 \pmod{p^a}\), where \(p^a=\max\{|X|\mid X\in\mathcal{X}\}\). A second theorem gives the corresponding \(\pi\)-version for finite non-trivial \(\pi\)-subgroups, assuming that each \(\mathrm{c}_{\Omega}(X)\) is a finite \(\pi'\)-soluble group, with congruence modulo \(m=\max\{|X|\mid X\in\mathcal{X}\}\).\N\NThe paper recovers Brown's homological Sylow theorem as a special case, identifies orbit posets with suitable fixed-point posets and proves congruence results for posets attached to normal subsets and to Sylow intersections. It also shows that for finite groups of Lie type in characteristic \(p\) the order complex of \(\mathcal{S}_p(G)_{\Omega}\) contains a subcomplex isomorphic to the building of \(G\) under a separation hypothesis on fixed points of unipotent radicals and that the reduced Lefschetz module \(\widetilde{L}((\mathcal{S}_p(G))_{\Omega})\) is virtual projective. The final section gives explicit calculations for several \(G\)-sets, including examples for \(\mathrm{SU}_3(q)\), \(M_{12}\) and \(\mathrm{Alt}(7)\) and shows in particular that \(\mathcal{S}_p(G)_{\Omega}\) and \(\mathcal{A}_p(G)_{\Omega}\) need not be homotopic.
