Fresh orderings of groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a group and let \(<\) be a linear order on the set \(G\) such that, whenever \(\emptyset\neq P\) is a finite subset of \(G\), then \(Pg\nsubseteq \bigcup_{x<g} Px\). Then \(<\) is said to be a fresh order on \(G\) and \(G\) is called freshly orderable. Let \(\mathcal F\) be the class of all freshly orderable groups; next, let \(\mathcal W\) be the class of all groups which admit a fresh well-ordering. Sample results: The infinite cyclic group has \(2^{\aleph_0}\) fresh orderings, all except two of them are well-orders. The additive group of rationals belongs to \(\mathcal F\) but not to \(\mathcal W\). Both \(\mathcal F\) and \(\mathcal W\) are closed under taking subgroups, forming extensions and Cartesian products.
