Gaschütz lemma for compact groups
\textit{W. Gaschütz}'s Lemma [Math. Nachr. 14, 249--252 (1955; Zbl 0071.25202)] states the following. Suppose the group \(G\) can be generated by \(n\) elements. Let \(N\) be a finite normal subgroup of \(G\), and let \(G/N\) be generated by the \(n\) cosets \(c_1, \dots, c_n\). Then there are generators \(g_1, \dots, g_n\) of \(G\) such that \(c_i = g_i N\) for each \(i\). This result can be extended, with the appropriate modifications, to profinite groups. In the paper under review the authors extend Gaschütz's Lemma to first-countable (that is, metrisable) compact groups.
