Gelfand pairs and Corwin-Greenleaf multiplicity function

From MaRDI portal

This paper studies the multiplicity function in branching laws for nilpotent Gelfand pairs \((K,N)\) and the associated semidirect product \(G = K \ltimes N\). The authors investigate the relationship between the representation-theoretic multiplicity \(m_\pi(\tau)\) and the Corwin-Greenleaf multiplicity function \(\chi(\mathcal{O}^G, \mathcal{O}^K)\), which counts certain intersections of coadjoint orbits. Under geometric and algebraic assumptions, they provide necessary and sufficient conditions for non-zero multiplicity. Indeed, they show that, in general, the two multiplicities do not coincide. For a special class of subgroups, they also prove boundedness of the Corwin-Greenleaf function. The work extends earlier orbit-method results and contributes to the understanding of branching rules in the nilpotent setting.
