Generalized Yamabe flows
Yamabe suggested a min-max procedure for producing Einstein metrics on \(M\). First for any Riemannian metric \(g_0\) on \(M\), find a minimum \(g_{\min}\) of the Einstein-Hilbert functional in the conformal class of \([ g_0]\) while keeping the total volume fixed. Here \(S = S (g)\) denotes the scalar curvature of \(g\). The second step is to find a maximum \(g\) of the Einstein-Hilbert amongst all \(g_{\min}\). The resulting metric if it exists is an Einstein metric. The space of Riemannian metrics is not compact, so the maximum and minimum may fail to exist. Existence of a minimizer of the Einstein-Hilbert action within a conformal class became known as the strong Yamabe conjecture. A necessary condition for minimization is of course to be a critical point, and critical points of the functional within a conformal class are precisely constant curvature metrics. This gives rise to the weak Yamabe conjecture: given a compact Riemannian manifold, can one conformally change the metric to make the scalar curvature constant. A proposed modification of the Yamabe flow in the setting of smooth compact manifolds: A generalized Yamabe flow is a family of Riemannian metrics in the conformal class of \(g_0\) such that a specific evolution equation holds. The family of functions \(u (t) \in C^{\infty} (M)\) is assumed to be positive. The paper starts by going over some conformal generalities of conformal flows. Several evolution equations are also deduced as well. It is shown in particular the short time existence if the flow by studying its linearization. The last three sections are dedicated to the scalar negative, flat and positive cases, respectively. Thus it is proved for a large class of flows that long time existence holds and the arguments are simpler than in the classical case. Also convergence is established for the case of negative scalar curvature and it is expected a similar result for the positive and flat
