Geometric quantization, Chern-Simons quantum mechanics and one-dimensional sigma models

From MaRDI portal

The quantization of the classical one-dimensional sigma model governed by the equations of motion \[ -c^ 2\nabla_ t\partial_ t\phi^ i+g^{ij}\omega_{jk}\partial_ t\phi^ k+g^{ij}\alpha_ j (\phi)=0\leqno(1) \] is studied applying canonical and geometric quantization schemes. Here \(\phi\) is a map sending the wordline into a compact manifold, without boundary, \(M\), \(g\) is a metric on \(M\), while \(\omega\) and \(\alpha\) are closed forms of degree two and one respectively. \(\nabla_ t\) means \(\partial_ t\phi^ i\nabla_ i\) where \(\nabla_ i\) is the Levi-Civita connection of the metric \(g\). These equations describe the propagation of a charged particle in a gravitational background coupled to a magnetic field and to a scalar potential. Besides, the topological model whose equations of motion do not depend on the metric \(g\) is introduced and examined. The last model is obtained by setting the kinetic term in \((1)\) equal to zero (\(c^ 2=0\)). The main problem of the paper is to answer the following question: Does the corresponding quantum theory of \((1)\) coincide with that one for the topological model after taking the limit \(c^ 2\rightarrow 0\)? The same question arises for their supersymmetric extensions. The final finding is that there is not a generic correspondence between the quantum theories which is stable in \(c^ 2\rightarrow0\) limit.
