Geometry of first nonempty Terracini loci

From MaRDI portal

This paper deals with Terracini loci of projective varieties, a subject that has gathered quite an interest alongside research activities about secant varieties. Namely, given a nondegenerate projective variety \(X\), the \(r\)-Terracini locus Ter\(_r(X)\) of \(X\) is made by the sets of \(r\) points of \(X\) for which the \(r\) tangent spaces at these points are linearly dependent, i.e. they span a linear space of dimension smaller than expected. Such Terracini loci of a variety \(X\) are still quite unknown, even for smooth curves or surfaces. It is an open also to determine whether the Terracini loci of a projective variety are empty or not, with few results about this. When a Terracini locus is nonempty, the next natural question is to characterize it geometrically.\N\NThis paper gives several new noteworthy contributes to those questions, namely:\N\N-- when \(X\subset \mathbb{P}^n\) is a smooth irreducible curve of genus \(g\), conditions on \(r\) depending on \(n,g\) are given in order to have that Ter\(_r(X)=\emptyset\).\N\N-- when \(X\) is a Del Pezzo, a complete description of Terracini loci is given.\N\N-- when \(X\) is either a Veronese variety or a Segre-Veronese variety, the value \(r\) of the smaller non-empty Terracini locus is given, and also a geometric description of it.\N\NEventually, algorithms are given to compute Terracini loci from the defining ideal (or from a parametric description) of \(X\).
