Group actions in a unit-regular ring

From MaRDI portal

For a ring \(R\), let \(X\) be the set of all nonzero nonunits of \(R\) and \(G\) the group of all units of \(R\). An action \(\varphi\colon G\times X\to X\) by \(\varphi(g,x)=gx\) is called the regular action. \(G\) is said to be half-transitive on \(X\) if \(G\) is transitive on \(X\) (i.e., there is \(x\in X\) such that \(o(x)=\{\varphi(g,x)\mid g\in G\}=X)\) or \(o(x)\) is finite with \(|o(x)|>1\) and \(o(x)=o(y)\) for all \(x,y\in X\). Assume that \(R\) is a unit-regular ring, \(X\) nonempty and \(G\) is half-transitive on \(X\). It is shown that if \(R\) has only finitely many idempotents or 2 is unit in \(R\), then \(R\) is a finite ring and \(R\) is either isomorphic to a ring \(F\times F\) (where \(F\) is a finite field with \(|F|>2\)) or isomorphic to the \(2\times 2\) matrix ring over a finite field. Also it is proved that if a ring \(R\) is unit-regular, \(G\) an Abelian group, and 2 is unit in \(R\), then \(R\) is a commutative ring.
