Growth problems for representations of finite groups

From MaRDI portal

For a finite group \(G\), an algebraically closed field \(k\) and a finite-dimensional \(kG\)-module \(V\), let \(b_{G,V}(n)\) denote the number of indecomposable summands of \(V^{\otimes n}\), counted with multiplicity. The paper determines the asymptotic behavior of \(b_{G,V}(n)\) when \(V\) is faithful and \(\operatorname{char} k\) is arbitrary. The leading term is expressed through the irreducible Brauer character table, the \(p\)-regular conjugacy classes of \(G\) and the subgroup \(Z_V(G)\) consisting of the elements acting on \(V\) as scalars. Estimates are also obtained for the relative error and for \[|b_{G,V}(n)-a(n)|\] in terms of the second largest eigenvalue of the action matrix.\N\NIn characteristic zero, an exact formula for \(b_{G,V}(n)\) is given in terms of the ordinary character table. If \(V\) and \(W\) are faithful complex representations satisfying \(Z_V(G)=Z_W(G)\), the periodic coefficient in the corresponding asymptotic formula is the same for \(V\) and \(W\). In particular, this coefficient is independent of the chosen faithful irreducible representation.\N\NExact or asymptotic formulas are worked out for dihedral and symmetric groups, for \(\operatorname{SL}(2,q)\) and \(\operatorname{GL}(2,q)\) and for a family of semidirect products of cyclic \(p\)-groups. In defining characteristic, the paper also determines the second largest eigenvalues for indecomposable modules of cyclic groups of prime order and of the Klein four group. Magma code used in the computations is included.
