Higher dimensional universal functions from lower dimensional ones

From MaRDI portal

In this short paper, the authors prove that if there is a \textit{universal} function \(U:[\omega_1]^2\to \omega\), i.e., such that for any other \(G:[\omega_1]^2\to \omega\) there exists an injection \(e: \omega_1 \to \omega_1\) satisfying\N\[\N\forall a,b\in\omega_1 \text{ different},\ G(\{ a,b \}) = U(\{ e(a),e(b) \}),\N\]\Nthen there is such a universal function for the case of exponent \(3\) everywhere.\N\NA key combinatorial element in the proof is to essentially replace the first \(\omega\) above by the set of hereditarily finite functions, and then encode 3-element arguments \(\{ a,b,c \}\) by way of ``self application -- as in \(U(\{b,c\})\bigl(U(\{a,c\})\bigr)\).\N\NThe paper leaves open a corresponding question for the problem of going from universal graphs to \(3\)-hypergraphs.
