Homogenization and structural topology optimization. Theory, practice and software

From MaRDI portal

This book brings together two concepts: the homogenization theory, and structural topology optimization. In this combined approach, the search of optimal topology, accompanied by a rough optimal shape and size, is inherently a point-wise ``material/no material problem, but, contrary to many engineering-intuitive methods, this approach is based on a well-established mathematical limit theory of homogenization. Another advantage is that in the homogenization method the shape of the structure is represented without geometrical segments (i.e. lines, circular arcs, elliptic arcs and splines), and thus it is not necessary to change the initial finite element mesh during the optimization process. The book is divided into three parts. Part I ``Homogenization (chapter 2 ``Homogenization theory for media with a periodic structure and chapter 3 ``Solution of homogenization equations for topology optimization) presents the fundamentals of homogenization theory for periodic media with the corresponding mathematical tools, introduces various material models suitable for use in structural optimization, and gives analytical solutions for different laminate composites and models with voids. The main part II ``Topology optimization consists of three chapters. Chapter 4 ``Structural topology optimization using optimality criteria methods explains via examples the Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions, discusses some analytical optimal criteria methods, and introduces a modified resizing scheme. An optimization problem with the objective of total potential energy to be maximized is considered as an illustration. Chapter 5 ``Experiences in topology optimization of plane stress problems presents parametric investigations for selected plane stress problems. The topics of chapter 6 ``Topological layout and reinforcement optimization of plate structures are applications of plate microstructure models based on Mindlin-Reissner theory to finite element analysis of homogenized reinforced materials. Finally, part III ``Other methods and integrated structural optimization consists of chapters 7 and 8, which provide some alternative methods to the structural optimization (functional adaptation of bone mineralization, evolutionary fully stress design method, and the idea of ``integrated structural optimization based on bubble and ground structure methods combined with the image processing modules). Written with clarity and provided with CD-ROM containing some accompanying programs in Fortran 77, the book should be certainly of interest to students, engineers and specialists dealing with structure optimization.
