Homological Dimensions of Semigroup Rings

From MaRDI portal

The paper is concerned with homological dimensions of a semigroup ring \(R[S]\) of a finite semisimple monoid \(S\) over a ring \(R\). In particular, it is shown that \(R[S]\) has finite global dimension (weak global dimension, respectively) if and only if \(R[G]\) has finite global dimension (weak dimension) for every maximal subgroup \(G\) of \(S\). Also, certain bounds are found for three types of finitistic dimensions and for the injective dimension of \(R[S]\). Namely, it is shown that \(\dim(R)\leq\dim(R[S])\leq\dim(R)+2\ell-2\) for any of these finitistic dimensions, where \(\ell\) stands for the number of nonzero principal factors of \(S\). The same bounds are obtained for the injective dimension in case where \(R\) is Noetherian and the injective dimension of \(R[S]\) is finite. The proofs exploit techniques coming from Rees matrix semigroups and the associated algebras of matrix type. The authors first prove a change of rings result of independent interest, which is applicable in this context.
